WHO AM I?
I am a licensed clinical social worker with 12 years of experience. I primarily provide individual psychotherapy to adults who are coping with various life circumstances, specifically those who are healing from trauma and grief.
I have a Master of Social Work from Boston College, where I did training focused on adult psychological trauma at The Brookline Center. I did my post-graduate training in Virginia where I am currently licensed to practice. I am licensed in DC, as well. I also have a Master of Public Health from Johns Hopkins University.
Having been on both sides of the “therapy couch," I know how important it is to feel like you’re talking to a human being, a person with their own life experiences, interests, and idiosyncrasies. I became a therapist because, like you, I'm not unscathed by life. Pain touches us all. I know how it feels to be lost in the dark. I also know how healing it feels to know you're not alone in it. I love what I do. Human beings are endlessly fascinating to me and the people I have been privileged to work with are my inspiration.
A bit more about me: I spent all of my twenties working in international development and lived and worked extensively in South Africa. I'm an avid reader especially of anything related to the social sciences and pop neuroscience. You'll notice my bookshelves behind me in sessions. I also love being in nature, nerd out about film and photography, reference Lord of the Rings way too much (or not enough), and cherish spending time with my family, friends and dog Moneypenny.
WHAT IS IT LIKE TO WORK WITH ME?
I definitely bring my personality into the work. Former and current clients have described me as intelligent, warm, funny (I think humor is an amazing way to connect), compassionate, resourceful, and engaging. I am not a passive participant. You will definitely get more than "How are you feeling?" in therapy with me.
Initial sessions will focus on establishing a therapeutic relationship, which I believe is the essential vehicle for healing. I will work with you at your pace to build rapport and foster trust by cultivating a non-judgmental, comfortable space that encourages open-ness and reflection. I do insight-oriented therapy as well as skill-building and often utilize both depending on what you need. Like many therapists, I take an integrative approach and utilize different modalities that I have found effective in this work.
If you’re interested in working with me, I like to spend 20 minutes chatting on the phone to learn more about you and what you are looking for in therapy, with no cost to you. Feel free to call or email me.
Please note that I ONLY do telemental health and do not currently work out of an office space. I also offer sliding scale fee options, if needed.
